Neil Gavin's work lives at the tension between documentary and scripted, constantly blurring the line between real life and fiction. Compositional precision, sculpted lighting and a refined sense of mise-en-scène give real-world subjects a cinematic presence, while his portraits and campaigns stay grounded in an observational honesty that feels earned rather than performed.
Born in Dublin he has built a transatlantic career shooting for ELLE, Esquire, GQ, Rolling Stone, The Telegraph Magazine, Vogue and Vanity Fair and alongside campaigns for J.Crew, Nike, Ralph Lauren, Breitling and Cutler and Gross. His subjects have included Kevin Bacon, Beck, Beastie Boys, Danny Boyle, Erling Haaland, Tom Holland, Killer Mike, Keith Richards, Kanye West and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Drawn to lives shaped by toughness, New York ironworkers, Dublin fighters, Venice skateboarders, Gavin brings editorial polish to the raw while preserving tenderness and dignity. Equally fluent in luxury campaigns and long-form documentary, his images ask whether you are looking at a staged tableau or an unmediated moment. The answer is usually both.
A substantial body of his portrait work is held in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London.
